Unlimited Power One of the hobbies I enjoy is to ride motorcycles. I started riding motorcycles back in my high school days, then through a good part of college, and then I took a break after getting married (not literally, mind you). Now again, I'm back in the saddle. When riding a motorcycle, there a certain words used to describe the various qualities and differences between motorcycles. You can purchase sport bikes, cruisers, dirt bikes, sport-tourers, and custom variations of motorcycles of all kinds. Yet the terms that help describe the individual bikes themselves are terms like horsepower, handling, torque, rigidity, ergonomics, and even just plain 'fun'. As enjoyable as a motorcycle can be and 'is' to ride, these same qualities are something I can relate to on a much, much bigger scale. For example, a bike that has good horsepower means it can certainly go fast when the engine is revved up. 130 horsepower is much stronger than 100 or 80 or 60, of course. Each bike has its limitations, however, and manufacturers and buyers are always attempting to get more horsepower out of their bikes. But the Lord, when it comes to horsepower, is endless. All power belongs to the Lord. You never run out of the Power of the Lord when it is needed. Psalm 20:7-8 says: Some trust in chariots, and some in horses; but we will remember the name of the LORD our God. They have bowed down and fallen; but we have risen and stand upright. There are many motorcycle riders that have taken their 'horsepower' to the limits and sure enough, fallen down. Looking for the thrill of speed to fill the void in our hearts is not the answer to what will let us rise and stand upright. In motorcycle riding, the more the horsepower is utilized, the greater the risk and certainty of an accident. But with the Lord, the more the power of God is utilized, the more certain you will stay upright and not fall down or bow down to the pavement! Speaking of the Lord's power as related to horsepower, Psalm 68:17 says The chariots of God are twenty thousand, even thousands of thousands; the Lord is among them as in Sinai, in the Holy Place. One of the largest consumer motorcycles you can purchase has over 500 horsepower. But 20,000? Or even thousands of thousands? I'll take the Lord any day over what a motorcycle can give. Wouldn't you??? Revelation 19:6 speaks of God's Power when it says: And I heard, as it were, the voice of a great multitude, as the sound of many waters and as the sound of mighty thunderings, saying, "Alleluia! For the Lord God Omnipotent reigns!" Even in our English dictionary the word 'omnipotence' means "an agency or force of unlimited power"!!! That is our God!! How about some of these other descriptions of a motorcycle? Like 'handling'? God can handle anything! Genesis 18:14 says: "Is anything too hard for the LORD?" NO, it is not!! How about 'ergonomics'? This is speaking of the 'comfort' of the motorcycle for the rider. Well, you guessed it, God has gobs of 'comfort' for us in all situations, in all circumstances. Regardless of our size, weight, height, inseam, or arm length, in the Lord there is always 'comfort' – perfect ergonomics for each of us. Even the simplest of descriptions for a motorcycle rider are far exceeded in our relationship with God our Father in His Son. When I think of 'fun' or the word 'joy', there is no comparison what-so-ever between a motorcycles temporary thrills and the 'joy of the Lord'!! Nehemiah 8:10-12 says: "Do not sorrow, for the joy of the LORD is your strength." So the Levites quieted all the people, saying, "Be still, for the day is holy; do not be grieved." And all the people went their way to eat and drink, to send portions and rejoice greatly, because they understood the words that were declared to them. As much as I do enjoy motorcycles, I pray you and I both understand the words that are declared to us: "Do not sorrow, for the joy of the Lord is your strength." In all things, our Lord is our source for all that we need. Praise God for His power, comfort, and handling capabilities! He indeed is Lord! Enjoy your ride with God! There's nothing more thrilling than to journey with Him! See a list of all columns by Pastor Jaca |
